My dear friend who I shall call Vanilla Bean doesn't like the loud booming noises of fireworks. Last year Vanilla Bean and I went and saw The Devil Wears Prada and this year we decided to see one of the greatest movies of all time- Ratatouille. It was fantastic! The animation with Pixar just keeps getting better. There were honestly times where I had to remind myself that the scenes weren't shot in Paris.
I love it that the two sinister characters embodied two somewhat controversial or at the very least thought-provoking ideas. The first is the skinny food lover. Perhaps this is just controversial to me, and while there are definitely some people that have a fast metabolism who love food and remain skinny. It's just a concept I struggle with. Perhaps its because of my love of food that has aided me in my weight gain. Back to the skinny food lover though. There are also food lovers those that understand portion control, and the skinny food lover in the movie even said that if he doesn't love the food then he isn't going to eat it. It makes perfect sense of course, but it's unsettling. Its like a car lover riding a bike, or Pooh Bear eating a sour apple jolly rancher, or a vegan baker (I met one once at culinary camp, the only thing she could eat the whole week was one type of bread, it was a tragedy). I'm sure it happens, but it just doesn't seem right. And I must clarify, it's one thing to be a slim food lover and its another to be a rail thin, can hide behind a light post, skinny food lover.
The other is a chef that tries to sell microwave mini corn dogs and if you listen carefully, I believe he also tries to sell microwave Haggis. He sells out a deceased chef's image to make a fast buck. He doesn't care about the food so much as taking over the world with his microwavable atrocities. His story is sad and definitely makes a point.
This movie just hit home with me. One of my brothers had a snake growing up that sometimes wouldn't eat the mice we would provide. So one year we had a lot of mice in one cage that had been rejected by the snake and unfortunately we thought that they were all boys. We were wrong and accidentally bred mice for a couple weeks, so I am comfortable with mice and rats and have always thought that they are adorable (if you have a fear of rats or a lot of rats then I feel I should warn you that Vanilla Bean let out an occasional "Oh my God!" at the amount of rats). Plus it was about cooking. I was already in love with the movie before I saw it, and it did not disappoint!
The current state of food is discussed throughout the movie, both in character development and snide remarks about the "American way" (*ahem* corn dogs). Plus it is a really cute storyline and passion embodies every bit of this movie. The passion is truly contagious and the movie is absolutely delicious.
